Remembering Your Kick Ass Self

There is never a perfect picture. There is never a perfect age or stage- when we look back with nostalgia at a time in our life- we are simply shining the flashlight on the best parts, the highlights, if you will.

So- without thinking too much- what age were you when you knew what you  loved? Things may not have been harmonious, or perfect, but you had a strong sense of what you enjoyed, what you wanted to be, do or have… were you three years old and loved to spin around to music till you got dizzy and fell over? Were you seventeen and you were a passionate vegan, who loved indie cinema and bohemian op shop clothing? Were you twenty-one and had gained your independence? What age were you when you knew what you loved? That age holds all the answers.

If your seventeen year old self (or what ever age you have chosen) had a message for you right now, what would it be? “Wear Doc. Martens, listen to Tori Amos, do a drawing and smoke a cigarette.” Cool- except for that last one. A cup of tea will be a good replacement: only listen to the advice that’s good for you. Listen to the guidance and act on it.

Exercise- Advice from Your Chosen Age

Insert the chosen age “When I was ___ years old I loved to…” and then list the numbers one to twenty. Next to each thing that you’ve listed, write the feeling of the experience- for example, when you were seventeen maybe you loved going to art galleries, and the feeling you experienced was inspiration. Identify the feeling for each thing that you loved.

Now- next to each item, write an action step that you can take immediately, or over the next week that can address the items on the list. For the above example, the action step would be to go to an exhibition. If you loved The Beastie Boys when you were fourteen, listen to an album. If The Labyrinth was your favourite movie when you were nine- watch it.

When you reconnect to the things that brought you so much joy, you remember why they did in actual fact inspire you. You remember a vital part of yourself you may have forgotten. You reawaken within yourself an aspect of your creativity and true essence that holds the key to your current happiness.

I‘d love to hear from you after you do the exercise- what did you remember? What action steps did you take in reconnecting to your past passions/interests?

Leave Your Inner Critic In the Car Park

Hi Peeps,

This week, my latest round of courses began in Creative Performance, here in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. I have come to realise what I’m facilitating here is not actually an Acting course, but rather a creative freedom technique, designed to uplift and inspire participants to connect to the highest level of their truth. The purpose of this work is to be fully immersive within the process, to detach from outcome and to realign to the true self, the higher self- the spiritual part of you that wants the best for you- that is both purely supported and supportive.

This week, I spoke about the ego- the inner critic, as Jennifer Grace calls it “The Itty Bitty Shitty Committee”, the negative voice in our heads, that is there perhaps to protect us, but is actually blocking us from our true creative potential. Our creativity is boundless- we are infinitely creative and we really haven’t got time to block ourselves with this “stuff”. Easier said than done.

After class this week I had a bit of an epiphany because I realised the exact moment that my ego/inner critic took over and the negative impact it had both on my personal life and in my Acting career. When I was young and simply was fully present and in the moment, fully committed to the words/the process, I was completely connected to the intention of the work. My greatest performances were at ages 15, 17, 19 and 21. After that I was hijacked by my inner critic- an energy that could not breathe, that was so terrified of losing, of being left behind, of not being seen, of being noticed- comparison, self doubt and high level anxiety.

My time training at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was both traumatic and miraculous. I was fully supported with my dream of attending one of the best Drama schools in the UK by receiving a full scholarship- a miracle- but guess what? When I got there, for several reasons- I felt like I didn’t deserve this reward. The self doubt was, in fact paralysing and traumatising- and was only lifted by working with highly skilled master teachers- such as Edward Argent, Adrian Howells and Nadine George- who all embodied the essence of what a great teacher/guide should be- is to teach, support and help you up the ladder on your journey of elevation. You should never be stifled, suffocated, abused, humiliated or destroyed by your elders- and instances like this is where we begin to believe what these negative voices are telling us.

So. In a nut shell- our inner critic needs to be left outside of the room as much as possible- we need to be supported in our creative process so that we can do what we are meant to do. Let us be elevated and expanded rather than stifled, suffocated and shut down. Be your greatest ally xx

Coaching sessions are available via Skype, workshops are run nationally and internationally by arrangement.

CREATIVE PERFORMANCE; A METHOD FOR ACTIVATING THE SOUL

Hi Peeps,

My 7 Week Courses in Creative Performance kick off tomorrow in Newcastle “Acting Fundamentals” for Beginners/Intermediate and “Pasvolsky Studio”for Upper Intermediate/Advanced…but if you don’t live in Newcastle but are interested in the work I also have Skype classes/tuition and will be holding in person workshops in Sydney in early 2016. So please, if this work speaks to you- do get in touch.

The purpose of my work is to introduce students, clients and participants to dynamic and soul shifting techniques, which are designed to radically shift individuals into a place of self empowerment, confidence and receptivity. It is not traditional Actor Training- it’s Creative Guidance.

In the Beginners Class, students work with Voice, Movement and Improvisation and focus on creating their own characters, characterisations and scenes. There is an emphasis on supportive performance and participants are often amazed at how quickly they can move into a place of self assurance, actualisation and creativity.

The Pasvolsky Studio focuses on a different “Master Teacher” or Practitioner each week, which is the emphasis of the learning. We then use that master teacher/practitioner or style as the basis of creating our own original content for performance. This all happens within the time frame of three hours.

This week in the studio our inspirational artist is Mike Leigh. We will look at the work, ethics, style and unique vision of Mike Leigh and then participate in exercises I have designed based on the improvisational techniques of ML. Students will create a character, based on somebody they know and then start improvisations/interviews with other ensemble members which will then develop into scenes and then into a performance.

We’ve got a very exciting 7 Weeks ahead of us, if this sounds like something you may like to access- please do get in touch. Best wishes, Claire x

PASVOLSKY STUDIO- A DIFFERENT KIND OF ACTOR TRAINING

First of all, I don’t just train actors. I help individuals step into their power so that they can experience the wonder of their artistry. That may sound extreme, but really, everyone who feels guided, curious or compelled to join one of my Acting or Creativity courses is hearing their soul request to experience something special.

If you decide to train with me, you will experience a different kind of actor training. I believe if a participant does not receive support, nourishment and the feeling of safety then they will not be able to experience the highest form of their creativity. In order to experience creative joy that is unbounded pure energy, a student needs to be uplifted and empowerment. My work is all about empowering artists as they step into their birthright of self expression and heightened creativity.

During my own actor training, there was very little emotional support from my teachers- not always, but generally- given the depth of the emotional well you were expected to dive into and the great extent of the vulnerability you were required to participate in performance training. Students need a safety net. Artists need to know that they are safe and protected when they step into the space.

In my classes and coaching the safety net is ALWAYS there. There are now rules of respect, guidelines and boundaries to firmly have in place a code of conduct and ethics:

a) If you ever feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable by an exercise or sections of a workshop you are welcome to observe or step out of the room

b) We treat each other with respect and honour peoples words and perspectives by fully listening to them and not interrupting them when they’re speaking

c) If you are ever given material (a scene or scenario) that you don’t feel comfortable with tell me and we’ll find you something else

In my Acting and Creativity Courses you will feel supported, safe, guided, inspired and fully engaged. If the choice feels right for you- enrolments are being taken for the 7 Week Courses in Term 4. For details see the website (clairepasvolsky.com or email me clairepasvolsky@gmail.com)- early bird specials end this week. Alternatively if you are not in Newcastle but require coaching and support I run sessions over Skype for my national and international students)

If the choice feels right for you, get in touch today. cx

CREATIVE POWER SESSIONS; THE ANSWER YOU’VE BEEN SEEKING

What is a Creative Power Session?

“I have coined this term “Creative Power Session” because it describes what I do in a session. I help people with their creative goals and aspirations in an immediate, helpful and empowering way. It’s a little bit like therapy with a dash of life coaching- but creativity is our focus, I listen to the facts- where are you now, where do you want to be and we put structure a creative plan for you and put it into immediate action. Whether you’re an actor, writer, film maker, poet, or simply want to nurture the creative side of yourself- you’ll leave a session feeling energised, inspired, motivated with complete clarity.”

What kinds of people do Creative Power Sessions?

“One of the reasons I feel blessed and priviliged to do the work that I do is that I get to meet such diverse and fascinating people. Clients past and present include actors, teachers, writers, poets, University students, doctors, nurses, engineers, academics, full time mothers, musicians and artists of all kinds…the one thing in common my clients possess is that they have a deep urning to live their creativity- they are looking for something higher, a way to access their artistic gifts, interests and joy. My intention for each session is to connect you to your truth, to inspire and support you and to hold you accountable for the action steps you need to take in the next part of your journey.”

What can clients expect during a Creative Power Session?

“Expect to be inspired, motivated, supported, to feel more confident, to gain clarity and to actually feel excited about your creativity journey rather than fearful.”

How many sessions does a client need?

“Every client is different. Some people want support/guidance and direction over a period of time, so they may come to me for 6 to 8 sessions. Some come for a one off session because there is something specific they want to focus on- such as an audition or a performance. Some clients have regular monthly sessions, some weekly sessions if they need more support over a long term vision such as a career shift, working on a project- everyone is unique.

Creative Power Sessions are usually conducted by Skype call, but can be face to face by special arrangement if you are in Newcastle or Sydney. Cost is $70 per hour or $95 for 90 minutes. To book email clairepasvolsky@gmail.com or go to clairepasvolsky.com for more information and testemonials

PRECIOUS GIFTS OF SIGNIFICANCE- CREATING MEANINGFUL PERFORMANCE

“With this performance piece, I am seeking the answer to this question- Can something truly precious be exchanged in a fleeting moment of time?” Lauren Cruickshank

My dear friend, performance artist Lauren Cruickshank had an amazing conversation last week. Lauren lives in Melbourne and has recently been on an artistic pilgrimage around Australia and on her return home, had a life altering conversation with a taxi driver.

The young Indian taxi driver spoke to Lauren about his work as connecting with people. He told her that the conversations he has with his passangers are precious gifts- gifts of significance. He told Lauren about an elderly passenger who appeared much younger than his ninety years- when the driver asked him what his secret was he said, “I have always sung. I love music, I always listen to it and sing in choirs. I married the love of my life and every delicious meal she made me was cooked with love. Music, love and food made with love makes for a happy life.”

This got Lauren thinking about creating a performance piece based on creating an exchange between herself and one on one audience members to create an actual meaningful connection- this was the subject of our conversation last week, and what she is currently now developing.

Thanks to another deep and meaningful chat with Lauren- I was inspired to create an improvisational exercise in last week’s classes based on meaningful connections and significant gifts. I had class participants, simply being themselves and picking out a question that I had selected. Questions included; “What is the soul?” “Do you believe in past lives?” “What has been your greatest success in life/why etc” “Who do you wish you had thanked?” What occurred was quite remarkable. Participants connected with each other in a quite profound way- sharing their knowledge, philosophies, insights and experiences. There was the listening, the offering and the give and take of an improvisation- which really is still, often just a conversation. However, because the participants were being themselves and sharing their own insights- the exercise was meaningful. It was precious.

Thank you Lauren for our conversation and inspiration. This experience has also shed light on something for me as an Acting and Creativity Practitioner and Teaching Artist- I want the space of my classes and rehearsal spaces and performances to be significant, meaningful and precious. Acting and Creativity is all about connection- genuine connection, openness and vulnerability.

Enrolments and early bird specials are now available for Term 4- Acting Fundamentals- for Grown Ups will run Saturday mornings (9-11 am) at Merewether Uniting Church Hall- this class is suitable for Beginners to Intermediate Level- Voice, Movement, Acting, Improvisation, Character Development, Text Interpretation- Early bird special is $180.
