PRECIOUS GIFTS OF SIGNIFICANCE- CREATING MEANINGFUL PERFORMANCE

“With this performance piece, I am seeking the answer to this question- Can something truly precious be exchanged in a fleeting moment of time?” Lauren Cruickshank

My dear friend, performance artist Lauren Cruickshank had an amazing conversation last week. Lauren lives in Melbourne and has recently been on an artistic pilgrimage around Australia and on her return home, had a life altering conversation with a taxi driver.

The young Indian taxi driver spoke to Lauren about his work as connecting with people. He told her that the conversations he has with his passangers are precious gifts- gifts of significance. He told Lauren about an elderly passenger who appeared much younger than his ninety years- when the driver asked him what his secret was he said, “I have always sung. I love music, I always listen to it and sing in choirs. I married the love of my life and every delicious meal she made me was cooked with love. Music, love and food made with love makes for a happy life.”

This got Lauren thinking about creating a performance piece based on creating an exchange between herself and one on one audience members to create an actual meaningful connection- this was the subject of our conversation last week, and what she is currently now developing.

Thanks to another deep and meaningful chat with Lauren- I was inspired to create an improvisational exercise in last week’s classes based on meaningful connections and significant gifts. I had class participants, simply being themselves and picking out a question that I had selected. Questions included; “What is the soul?” “Do you believe in past lives?” “What has been your greatest success in life/why etc” “Who do you wish you had thanked?” What occurred was quite remarkable. Participants connected with each other in a quite profound way- sharing their knowledge, philosophies, insights and experiences. There was the listening, the offering and the give and take of an improvisation- which really is still, often just a conversation. However, because the participants were being themselves and sharing their own insights- the exercise was meaningful. It was precious.

Thank you Lauren for our conversation and inspiration. This experience has also shed light on something for me as an Acting and Creativity Practitioner and Teaching Artist- I want the space of my classes and rehearsal spaces and performances to be significant, meaningful and precious. Acting and Creativity is all about connection- genuine connection, openness and vulnerability.

Enrolments and early bird specials are now available for Term 4- Acting Fundamentals- for Grown Ups will run Saturday mornings (9-11 am) at Merewether Uniting Church Hall- this class is suitable for Beginners to Intermediate Level- Voice, Movement, Acting, Improvisation, Character Development, Text Interpretation- Early bird special is $180.

Each week we will study the work of visionaries of screen and stage such as Mike Leigh, Robert Altman, Julie Taymor, John Guare, The One Person Show and Performance Art. This is a challenging, dynamic and unique course where you learn, integrate and then create. Early bird special- $270- Students must be punctual, cooperative and positive to participate.

UNLEASHING YOUR CREATIVITY- A 5 Week Course to Step into Your Power

“Unused creativity is not benign. It metastasizes. It turns into grief, rage, judgement, sorrow, shame.”- Dr. Brene Brown

Happy Monday!

I am really excited to announce that in October, I will be running my five week course “Unleashing Your Creativity”, for the second time this year. One of the reasons I love running/designing and facilitating this course is because of the miracles, shifts and transformations which occur within the group.

What kinds of people do the course? Anyone and everyone. You maybe a new mother who has lost her sense of direction, or working in an unsatisfying career. You may be a recent school leaver, or a retiree who wants to gain access to your unique strength and create a plan of forward movement.

Wherever you are now is where you begin. Each week we will meet on a Monday evening from 5.30pm- 8.30pm (Newcastle CBD, NSW) and do creative exercises including inventories, automatic writing, vision boards, mind mapping and creative visualisation (and much more)- exercises and activities that are designed to motivate and inspire you and to clear blockages. It’s time to shine, as we move into the warmer months, you will leave each class feeling clearer, happier and confident.

WHY DO THE COURSE?

1. To remember who you are

2. To gain clarity and perspective

3. To access your own creativity

4. To be accountable in a supportive and safe group dynamic

5. To allow yourself to do what you love doing

Course numbers are limited, so contact me ASAP with expressions of interest. The cost of the course (materials and handouts included) is $250- but if payment is received by August 31st- the early bird price is $200.

Life Designing; Creating Your Ideal Life…today!

Hi Friends,

Many of us dream about achieving everything one day. The car, the dream home, the successful career, the perfect body; the list goes on…”one day, I’ll get there,” we tell ourselves. Well, what about today? Why don’t we take a little time out today to design our ideal life, based on what we already have?

I did this exercise with a friend recently, and asked her to rate the following areas of her life out of ten (ten being the highest,, if something sucks right now, give it a 1). Doing this exercise surprised my friend, because she realized, that a lot was already working in her life. For example, for the category of Physical Environment, she scored a 10. My friend loves and appreciates her 2 bedroom apartment. She loves the location, the Art Deco style, the rent is reasonable and she’s got it clean and organized. So it’s a 10. Yay! Romance was a 9, Money and Finances an 8, Personal Development a 9, Family and Friends a 9 and Fun and Joy an 8.

On the flip side, she scored 5 on Health and Fitness. So, I asked her, “what would it take to bring it to a 10?” The answer; more sleep, healthier food, an exercise routine. The next question, “what would it take to bring it to a 10 today?” The action steps included taking a walk on the beach , cooking a healthy dinner and going to bed an hour earlier. Snap! Instant improvement.

So here’s today’s exercise;
1. Under each category, give yourself a rating out of 10
Health and Fitness
Work and Career
Money and Finances
Physical Environment
Personal Development
romance
Family and Friends
Fun and Joy

2. Then, take a few moments to ask yourself, what would my life look like if every category scored a 10? Don’t write an essay, just a sentence or two will do.

3. Finally, choose one or two categories, preferably your lowest scoring categories and take 3 action steps TODAY! For example, maybe your finances suck. You score a 1. It’s a dismal state of affairs. What can you do to turn this around? Maybe one action step you can take is to borrow a financial classic from the library, (notice I said borrow, don’t buy!) like Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”. The second action step might be to make a mind map of how you can earn more money, the next might be to track your spending for a month (as in every cent you spend) in a small notebook, so at the end of the month you can review your spending and see what you can change.

4. By taking a few simple action steps today, in an area of our life that’s not working the way we want it to; we reclaim our power. As one of my gurus, Cheryl Richardson says “inactivity equals anxiety.” So let’s do it friends, let’s bring everything up to a 10! Enjoy!
